Role Summary

As an essential member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to deliver the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices within the legal and ethical frameworks established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope and Standards, ANA Code of Ethics, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role exemplifies leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and quality outcomes.

YNHHS nurses operate within our professional practice model, "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability." We emphasize Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence and data to support our practice, always centered on the patient and family.

Core Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations into practice.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Respect patients' values, preferences, expressed needs, and healthcare knowledge in holistic data collection, care planning, and evaluation.
Standards of Practice

Guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), the RN demonstrates competence through assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN coordinates care, promotes health and safety, and evaluates progress toward outcomes.

Standards of Professional Performance

The RN adheres to ANA Standards of Professional Performance (2015), demonstrating ethics, cultural competence, effective communication, collaboration, leadership, ongoing education, evidence-based practice, resource utilization, and environmental health practices. The RN is accountable for their actions and practices ethically and responsibly.

Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. Current BCLS certification required within one month of hire.
  • Experience: Entry-level RN with opportunities for advancement through the SPIRE program.
  • Licensure: Active RN license in Connecticut; specialty certification encouraged.
  • Skills: Foundational nursing skills with a focus on compassionate care and teamwork.
Physical Demands

Prolonged standing, walking, sensory engagement, exposure to infectious diseases, physical and emotional stress, and the ability to assist with patient mobility, including lifting up to 300 pounds.
