Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Department
Part-time / Day Shift (8:00am - 8:30pm; one 12/hr shift per week)

General Summary

This role is considered the minimum for all nurses with more than 12 months of experience. Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work for this classification. They are not exhaustive of all duties performed by personnel in this role.

Clinical Practice:

  1. Provides independent care to the unit-specific patient population; serves as a clinical resource for others, utilizing and integrating evidence into practice, and functioning effectively in roles specific to the unit (as defined by each department/unit).
  2. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care.
  3. Is accountable to peers for advancing group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
  4. Serves as an effective primary coordinating nurse; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs.

Service/Quality:

  1. Assists in team development and evaluation of Patient and Family Centered Care principles; suggests methods for improvement. Participates in data collection related to outcomes (e.g., handoffs, medication safety).
  2. Participates in initiatives addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
  3. Contributes to Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research at the unit level.
  4. Ensures compliance with standards and participates in unit-level activities for regulatory compliance.

Unit Operations:

  1. Supports charge nurse decisions; performs charge role for assigned shifts as needed.
  2. Assists in developing clinical practice protocols and standards for the unit.
  3. Participates in unit-based process activities such as Performance Improvement, Professional Development, Clinical Practice, and Teamwork; assists in developing and implementing action plans.
  4. Orients new Clinical Nurse I staff to the unit decision-making structures and councils.

Professional Development:

  1. Serves as preceptor, coach, and mentor to new nurses and students. Contributes to skills development of ancillary personnel, attends educational offerings and in-services independently.
