Location: Sioux Falls - Jameson Prison Annex
Salary: $33.24 to $38.97 per hour, plus $5.00/night and $1.50/weekend differential; potential overtime
Closing Date: open until filled
Shift: Day shift, 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., 36 hours per week, every third holiday and possibly every third weekend depending on staffing

Responsibilities
  • Document patient information accurately and timely to maintain comprehensive offender medical records.
  • Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
  • Transcribe reports at change of shifts.
  • Preserve confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Administer medications, perform physical care and treatments, and employ infection control measures.
  • Collaborate on treatment plans and provide referrals to appropriate clinical services for new arrivals.
  • Conduct crisis intervention, interviews, triages offenders, and provide instruction and orientation.
  • Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
  • Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
  • Occasionally participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
  • Observe and report on the physical and emotional condition of offenders, monitoring medication and treatment effectiveness during sick call and emergencies.
  • Promote safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations, contraband control, and accurate counting of syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and keys.
  • Operate a variety of clinical equipment available in the assigned work unit.
  • Report any violations of security or safety through the report‑writing process.
  • Attend required training programs, including completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
  • Work any shift, weekends, and holidays as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Required Competencies
  • Ability to effectively treat patients daily in a variety of settings.
  • Adherence to patient confidentiality standards.
  • Response to emergency situations involving offenders and medical circumstances.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading, comprehension, and fluent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent discernment and decision‑making skills.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to instructions.
  • Willingness to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Intravenous certification.
  • Long‑term and acute care experience.
  • Experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
Conditions of Employment

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Candidates must complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines.
