Location: Sioux Falls (Jameson Prison)
Salary: $25.73 to $34.03 per hour, plus $5.00 night / $1.50 weekend differential and potential overtime.
Position type: Full‑time, 36 hours per week, 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (night shift). Every third holiday.
What you will do
- Document accurate and timely offender medical records.
- Provide standardized patient education within nursing guidelines.
- Transcribe reports at shift change.
- Preserve confidentiality.
- Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, and refer to appropriate Clinical Services staff for new arrivals.
- Perform crisis intervention, interviews, and triage of offenders, and provide instruction and orientation.
- Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
- Order and restock medications and supplies.
- Participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons when required.
- Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders, including medication effectiveness during sick call and emergencies.
- Promote safety and security of the clinical environment, including contraband control, counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
- Operate a variety of clinical equipment as available in the assigned work unit.
- Inform the supervisor of any violations of security or safety through report writing.
- Attend training programs as assigned, including completion of the Basic Training Academy and the Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
- Work any shift, weekends, and holidays as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

- Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical situations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent discernment and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to detail.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Intravenous certification.
- Long‑term and acute care experience.
- Experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
Conditions of Employment
- Commitment to a drug and alcohol‑free work environment; job offers contingent upon background investigation, urine drug screen, and successful completion of essential functions.
- Eligibility to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray) if desired; must complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines.
- Tuberculosis screening required of all new employees upon hire.
