Job Summary

This position provides skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in various clinical clinic settings and is a night shift position at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. The nurse will work every third weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and every third holiday.

What you will do:
  • Documenting in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive inmate medical records;
  • Transcribing reports at shift changes;
  • Providing standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines;
  • Preserving confidentiality;
  • Providing physical care and treatments, administering medications, collaborating on treatment plans, employing infection control measures, providing crisis intervention, interviewing and triaging offenders and performing patient and staff instruction;
  • Assisting physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
  • Ensuring ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
  • May occasionally be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
  • Observing and reporting the physical and emotional condition of offenders, including the effectiveness of medications and treatments during triage, sick call, and emergency situations;
  • Performing physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick-call, and emergency situations, employing basic nursing and assessment skills and protocol;
  • Promoting and being accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
  • Operating a variety of clinical equipment dictated by the type of equipment available in the assigned work unit;
  • Informing supervisor of any violations of security or safety through the report writing process;
  • Attending training programs as assigned, including successful completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course;
  • Being required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications:
  • Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Required Competencies:
  • Ability to effectively treat patients on a daily basis in a variety of settings;

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical situations;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
  • Excellent discernment and decision making skills;
  • Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to details;
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full time basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Correctional nursing experience;
  • Acute Care or Long Term nursing experience;
  • Charge Nurse and/or supervisory experience.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spray will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines – this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self‑defense exam, which involves the following:
  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
  • Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
