Job summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) seeks an RN II to provide nursing care at Lexington County Detention Center in a day shift. You will conduct assessments, plan and implement care, and lead a care team within a secure correctional environment.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary staff, ensure PREA compliance, manage medications and sharps, and document all care in the medical record. RN licensure in SC or a compact state and BLS are required.

Qualifications

  • RN licensure in South Carolina or a compact state
  • Current BLS certification (AHA or Red Cross)
  • Bachelor's in Nursing preferred or enrolled BSN program
  • Minimum of one year RN experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care using the nursing process in a correctional setting
  • Direct and lead assigned team members and coordinate with correctional officers
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for inmates/detainees
  • Maintain PREA compliance and ensure safety and security protocols

Job Description Summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) provides healthcare across rural South Carolina. The RN II provides nursing care using the nursing process, directing team members and collaborating with multidisciplinary staff to provide appropriate care within a secure correctional setting.

Lexington County Detention Center Day Shift 7:00am - 7:00pm Provides nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Directs and leads other assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide age/developmentally appropriate care. Provides patient-centered care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Conducts assessments, develops nursing diagnoses, identifies outcomes, plans and implements interventions, provides health teaching, and evaluates care. Ensures a therapeutic environment and participates in professional governance and development.

Correctional-specific responsibilities include
  • Delivering nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols.
  • Responding promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.).
  • Managing care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units.
  • Coordinating with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintaining awareness of the security environment.
  • Maintaining strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools.
  • Ensuring proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations.
  • Documenting care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain-of-custody considerations when applicable.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor of Nursing preferred. RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years. Minimum one year of RN experience required.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Licensure as an RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current AHA BLS or Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers required.

Additional Job Description Minimum Requirements

Associate's Degree, and a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
