Job summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) seeks a qualified RN II to provide nursing care within the Lexington County Detention Center. This role directs team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary staff to ensure patient-centered care in a secure correctional setting.

Responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, with emphasis on safety, PREA compliance, and documentation within correctional records. 36-hour weekly shifts and rotating weekends are typical.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
  • RN with Associate or Diploma must be enrolled in BSN within 2 years and complete it within 4 years.
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required.
  • Licensure as an RN by SC Board of Nursing or a compact state; current BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care using the nursing process in a correctional setting.
  • Direct and lead assigned team members; coordinate with multidisciplinary staff.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care; provide health teaching.
  • Maintain therapeutic environment and participate in governance and development.

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) provides healthcare across rural South Carolina. The RN II provides nursing care using the nursing process, directing team members and collaborating with multidisciplinary staff to provide appropriate care within a secure correctional setting.

Provides nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Directs and leads other assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide age/developmentally appropriate care. Provides patient-centered care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Conducts assessments, develops nursing diagnoses, identifies outcomes, plans and implements interventions, provides health teaching, and evaluates care. Ensures a therapeutic environment and participates in professional governance and development.

Correctional-specific responsibilities
  • Delivering nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols.
  • Responding promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.).
  • Managing care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units.
  • Coordinating with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintaining awareness of the security environment.
  • Maintaining strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools.
  • Ensuring proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations.
  • Documenting care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain-of-custody considerations when applicable.
Minimum Education and Experience

— Bachelor of Nursing preferred. RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years. Minimum one year of RN experience required.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

— Licensure as an RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current AHA BLS or Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers required.

Minimum Requirements

— Associate's Degree, and a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.

— Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.

— Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  2. Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams.
  3. Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed.

  5. Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, as well as to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions.
  6. Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations.
  7. Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility.
  8. Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
