Job description

Summary

The Critical Care Float Pool (CCFP) is composed of experienced Intensive Care Unit (ICU) RNs who care for critically ill veterans. This RN position supports staffing across the facility, including a 16-bed ICU, two critical care step-down units, and the Emergency Department. The RN must demonstrate competency in caring for a variety of critically ill populations, including but not limited to: cardiac surgery, aortic vascular surgery, respiratory failure, and septic shock.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the time of application. Basic requirements include:

  1. English language proficiency, in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  2. Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing (ACEN or CCNE).
  3. For those in a master's level bridge program, completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  4. Possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing license in the U.S.
  5. Foreign nursing graduates must have current registration and may need degree equivalency validation.
  6. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates without licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.
  7. Preferred experience: 1-3 years of critical care experience; CCRN or related certification preferred.
Grade Determinations

Details on scope, education, and experience requirements for Nurse I, II, and III levels are provided, including specific educational credentials and experience needed for each grade.

Physical Requirements

Participation in pre-employment examinations or evaluations is required, with further questions addressed at that time.

Duties
  • Provide nursing care in various critical care environments, requiring flexibility and clinical judgment.
  • Engage in continuous improvement, staff engagement, and professional development.
  • Major duties include: interpreting telemetry, caring for complex critically ill patients, administering and monitoring high-risk medications, advanced airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, emergency response, promoting end-of-life care, and more.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, facilitate education, and support patient and caregiver needs.
  • Maintain skills in managing disruptive behaviors and promote evidence-based practices.
