Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System seeks a Nurse Manager for the Access Center to oversee the bed management process and enhance patient access and flow across the system. You will lead nurse coordinators, solve staffing and operational challenges, and drive initiatives with UMMS leaders to improve efficiency and quality of care.

You will use performance data to guide decisions, develop staffing plans to meet fluctuating volumes, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field required.
  • RN licensure active in Maryland required.
  • Minimum of five years as a registered nurse required.
  • At least two years of nursing leadership experience required.

Job description

Job Requirements

The Nurse Manager, Access Center oversees Access Center operations and the UMMS bed management process. This role leads efforts to improve patient access and flow, optimize bed utilization, support customer satisfaction, and advance system-wide patient care goals.


The Nurse Manager schedules and supports Access Center Nurse Coordinators, serves as a resource for problem-solving, identifies opportunities for improvement, and works with staff and UMMS leaders to implement effective processes. This role also manages staff performance and helps ensure operations meet regulatory and professional standards.


Key Responsibilities


  • Oversee and continuously improve the UMMS system-wide bed management process.

  • Ensure patients are matched to the appropriate bed based on clinical needs while maximizing system capacity and utilization.

  • Monitor patient flow, hospital capacity, transfers, and throughput across UMMS.

  • Partner with hospitals, medical staff, and system leaders on patient flow and bed management strategies.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary transfers and expand telehealth solutions when appropriate.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of Access Center Nurse Coordinator processes.

  • Use data and performance metrics to identify trends, improve operations, and support decision‑making.

  • Develop staffing plans, schedules, and skill mix to meet changing patient volumes and acuity.

  • Hire, coach, develop, and evaluate Access Center staff.

  • Promote collaboration among nurse, transfer, and dispatch coordinators to optimize Access Center operations.

  • Ensure services and staff performance meet regulatory requirements and professional standards.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for intrahospital and interhospital patient flow.

  • Participate in relevant UMMS committees and provide guidance to member organizations on patient flow.

  • Manage department resources and contribute to budget planning and financial goals.

  • Perform the Access Center Nurse Coordinator role as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience


  • Required Bachelor’s degree in health-related field.

  • Required RN licensure with current licensure in the State of Maryland.

  • Required five (5) years of experience as a registered nurse.

  • Required 2+ years of demonstrated nursing leadership experience.

  • Preferred Master’s degree in health-related field.
