Job Overview

Administers patient care in a hospital or inpatient setting, focusing on patients with advanced illnesses or injuries requiring complex, timely care to stabilize and support medical conditions. These units require a lower caregiver-to-patient ratio and highly trained staff with advanced skills.

Essential Functions
  1. Demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgment for caring for patients needing complex assessment, therapies, and high-level interventions.
  2. Uses assessment data to anticipate and respond confidently to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  3. Prioritizes information to take immediate, evidence-based, patient-focused actions.
  4. Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment, interpreting electronic displays such as intracranial pressures, cardiac rhythms, etc.
  5. Responds to life-threatening situations following nursing standards and protocols.
  6. Assesses patient needs, develops and revises individualized care plans, and evaluates progress.
  7. Respects diversity, building respectful relationships with team members and patients.
  8. Acts as a patient and family advocate.
  9. Provides age-appropriate care, demonstrating advanced nursing knowledge and skills.
  10. Serves as a preceptor, charge nurse, educator, or clinician, collaborating with medical staff and interdisciplinary teams.
  11. Supports hospital and nursing department goals, demonstrating leadership and professionalism.
  12. Coordinates care, delegates appropriately, and documents patient care following regulatory standards.
  13. Maintains competency in nursing skills and equipment use.
  14. Prioritizes ongoing patient care based on evidence-based standards.
  15. Communicates effectively with team members, providing compassionate care and respecting legal and patients’ rights.
  16. Supports new staff and students through collaboration with education and leadership teams.
  17. Maintains attendance and compliance with hospital policies and standards.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Contributes to team knowledge, professional practice improvement, and organizational outcomes.
  • Participates in committees, peer reviews, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Uses supplies efficiently, maintains a safe work environment, and attends development sessions.
  • Partners with leadership to identify educational needs and pursues ongoing professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved nursing school.
  • Meets competency requirements for Orlando Health and the specific unit.
Licensure/Certification
  • Current Florida RN license or valid eNLC multistate license.
  • Current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC required for certain areas; NRP specifically for NICU.
Experience
  • Minimum one year experience, preferably in a cardiac cath lab.
