Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse 3 to join the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center healthcare team in St. Gabriel, LA.

The role provides comprehensive clinical care in a secure facility, with opportunities to lead nursing staff and coordinate medical services. Ideal candidates will have an active Louisiana RN license or compatible multi-state license, with 2+ years of RN experience and relevant nursing education.

Qualifications

• Current Louisiana RN license or a temporary permit or multi‑state license through NLC/eNLC state to practice as an RN.
• Two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR
• A bachelor's degree in nursing plus one year of experience as an RN; OR
• A master's degree in nursing or public health plus one year of experience as an RN; OR
• A doctorate in nursing or public health.

Responsibilities

• Provides advanced professional nursing care to offenders with assessments, med administration, treatment planning and ongoing evaluation.
• Acts as clinical leader, guiding LPNs and RN staff and ensuring proper delegation and protocols.
• Responds to medical emergencies and coordinates care with physicians and staff.
• Performs detailed nursing assessments and communicates changes to providers for care plans.
• Oversees specialized clinics such as chronic care, mental health, infectious disease and intake screenings.
• Maintains accurate medical records meeting regulatory requirements.

Job Duties

• Provides advanced professional nursing care to offenders, including comprehensive assessments, medication administration, treatment planning, and ongoing evaluation of patient conditions in accordance with established nursing standards.
• Serves as a clinical leader within the nursing team, guiding and supporting LPNs, RN staff, and other healthcare personnel, ensuring proper delegation of tasks and adherence to facility protocols.
• Responds to medical emergencies and urgent situations, performing triage, initiating appropriate interventions, and coordinating care with physicians and other medical staff.
• Conducts detailed nursing assessments, documents findings, and communicates significant changes in patient status to providers, contributing to the development and adjustment of individualized care plans.
• Assists with and oversees specialized clinics, such as chronic care, mental health, infectious disease, and intake screenings, ensuring continuity of care and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Maintains accurate and thorough medical records, ensuring documentation meets legal, regulatory, and departmental requirements.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including mental health, security, and administrative staff, to promote coordinated, patient-centered care within a secure environment.
• Ensures adherence to infection control practices, medication management standards, and safety procedures to maintain a secure and therapeutic healthcare setting.
• Provides patient education on health conditions, medications, and self‑care practices, promoting wellness and supporting rehabilitation goals.
