Job description

Looking for qualified Registered Nurse to workMonday - Friday 8:00 - 4:30pm, with fulltime benefits. Salary is negotiablebased on relevant experience.Duties include providinghealth care to secure detention facility residents and other Juvenile Services group home residents such as, completing medical health assesments, providing medical treatment andcounseling and providing health education relevant to adolescent growth and development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Acts as the official health/medical resource to the detention home staff as related to control of communicable diseases, health and medical problems of detainees, and other relevant health problems.
  • Performs routine physical assessments on detainees and group home residents.
  • Administers TB tests to detainees, reads results and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Provides liaison activities with other health care providers in the community as related to facility and resident health care.
  • Obtains medical history, including possible allergies, chronic health problems, drug/alcohol abuse and other pertinent health information of detainees.
  • Holds "sick-call" for detainees/Juvenile Service group homeresidents, using discretion and judgment regarding referral to other health professionals.
  • Gives medication and performs treatment recommended by health professionals.
  • Trains facility staff in providing medications and treatment as required.
  • Performs first-aid measures when needed.
  • Consults with other professionals (i.e., doctors, nurses, probation officers, social workers, etc.) and parents regarding detainee's physical and emotional condition.
  • Provides information, including copies of detention home physical examinations, to other relevant professionals involved with the detainee.
  • Maintains health records of detainees.
  • Makes appointments and may accompany detainees as needed to various health/medical appointments, including the emergency room.
  • Requisitions, dispenses and inventories medical supplies, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.
  • Conducts or arranges classes for detainees and Juvenile Services residents on general health and hygiene, included but not limited to drug abuse, venereal diseases, and life skills dealing with health issues.
  • Assist in connecting detainees with community health resources and programs in preparation for their return to the community.
  • Serves as facility representative for OSHA regulations as related to health and medical areas.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no formal supervisory responsibilities. May direct and monitor the work of part-time nurses, interns and trainees.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requires graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of successful experience in graduate nursing, hospital work or related field. Possession of certificate as a registered professional nurse as issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia;

When assigned to Juvenile Detention

Possession of valid Motor Vehicle License and acceptable driving record based on City criteria;

Prior to employment must have Criminal Record Check and, reference checks completed, and Child Protective Services check initiated. Prior to onset of employment must have tuberculin and drug screen as part of physical examination
