Position Overview
Provides diagnostic, preventative and therapeutic dental hygiene treatment to pediatric patients, including those with developmental disabilities and/or who are medically compromised. Maintains proper documentation of dental condition and treatment. Utilizes age-appropriate behavior management techniques and demonstrates proficiency in the treatment triangle of patient, parent, and provider.
Age Group(s) Served:
- Neonatal (0-3 months) – limited to ICN preemie plate treatment
- Pediatric (3 months-12 years)
- Adolescent (13-18 years)
- Adult (18 years and above for special needs patients & college students)
Essential Job Functions
- Coordinate patient flow, greet patients warmly, prepare patients, schedule and dismiss appointments.
- Review and update medical history and consent forms accurately.
- Perform dental screenings, determine need for x-rays, and conduct oral prophylaxis including scaling and root planing.
- Assist orthodontist with procedures.
- Sterilize instruments and disinfect equipment per infection control standards.
- Maintain cleanliness and stock supplies in clinical areas.
- Capture quality diagnostic radiographs using child-friendly techniques.
- Document patient records legibly and accurately, including charting and scheduling.
- Train colleagues and students on infection control, x-ray techniques, and dental software.
- Educate patients and parents appropriately.
- Perform clinic opening and closing duties.
- Maintain communication with team members and adhere to policies.
- Use time and attendance systems accurately.
- Follow HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
- Attend training and staff meetings.
- Perform other duties as needed to support the clinic.
Qualifications
- Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene
- Dental Hygiene license and NYS registration
- Basic Life Saving and/or CPR certification
- Desire to work with children; experience preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Patient-centered with good customer service skills
- Commitment to pediatric dental care
- Flexible and positive attitude, willing to travel between offices
- Effective engagement with pediatric and special needs patients
- Knowledge of child development milestones
- Proficient in dental equipment and software
- Attention to detail and good documentation skills
ADA Requirements
- Use hands to handle tools, repeat motions, bend, sit for long periods, communicate verbally
- Lifting (1-10 pounds), walking (moderate to occasional)
