Job description

Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking a Registered Dental Hygienist to join our vibrant and diverse team with the Community Based Oral Health Field Program. Community Based Oral Health Dental hygienists work under the clinical supervision of a Dentist in a variety of dental preparation and prevention procedures and other related duties as required in a dental clinic and/or community program. This Dental Hygienist position will work 9 months (school year) in the Oral Health Field Program based at Eastgate Public Health Center which provides community-based services, primarily in schools. For the other 3 months (Summer), the position will work out of the float pool as a clinical dental hygienist for Community Health Services and Jail Health Services dental clinics throughout King. Working in JHS dental clinics requires passing a background check and obtaining approval from the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention. Float Pool assignments are made based on business needs. The position is expected to be able to travel to all clinics.

In addition to the traditional Dental Hygienist job duties, CBOHP Dental Hygienists do a variety of duties that includes School/Community Based Oral Health Services primarily in elementary schools, Daycare/Early Learning Centers. During the academic school year, the team mainly consists of Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Administrative Specialist doing Community Outreach, data collection and analysis, and working with other Community Partners. During the Summer months, the team works out of the float pool to support our 5 dental clinics and Jail Health Services doing traditional four handed dentistry.

Work Schedule

This position is part-time at 32 hours per week.

Primarily housed at Eastgate Public Health Center. 14350 SE Eastgate Way, Bellevue, WA 98007 and may need to float to the other Public Health Dental Clinics.

The following duties are performed in the community-based program and dental clinics:
  • Perform limited oral evaluations and risk assessments.
  • Require at least one (1) year of experience.
  • Require to drive to worksites
  • Require a valid WA State Driver's License
  • Assist in planning and conducting preventative health programs.
  • Conduct in-service workshops for community groups.
  • Apply dental sealants and other topical preventive agents in clinical and community-based settings.
  • Maintain statistics and records of oral health status of targeted groups.
  • Develop oral health education programs.
  • Operate oral evacuation system, air/water spray, etc. both in the clinics and in community settings with portable dental equipment.
  • Perform accurate charting using Electronic Dental Record (EPIC/WISDOM).
  • Perform other duties as allowed by the Washington State Dental Practice Act 18.32 and 18.26.
  • Maintain operatories and dental spaces in good working order and ensure compliance with OSHA/WISHA requirements. Comply with OSHA/WISHA standards in both clinical and community settings.
  • Clean and sterilize dental instruments in accordance with State and Federal requirements.
  • Educate patients in oral hygiene and anticipatory guidance health behaviors, provide group presentations primarily for sealant projects.
  • Complete client registrations, billing, and conduct follow-up with patients/families as needed.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of encounters as per Dental Program/Business Revenue Unit Policies and Procedures and Medicaid billing guidelines.
  • Responsible for accurate data entry and analysis for community-based program using statistical computer programs.
  • Maintain files as well as related treatment and client education records. Maintain community site files and information.
  • Maintain supply of educational materials.
  • Maintain dental supply inventory and prepare supply orders.
  • Maintain dental equipment (clinical and portable) and process repairs.
  • Make patient reminder calls and follow up on missed appointments daily. Reschedule appointments as necessary. Contact community sites to schedule dates and follow up with information gathering related to community services.
  • Do data entry and program evaluations for reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate:
  • Completion of at least a two-year accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Washington State Dental Hygiene license.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in dental hygiene.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish working relationships in a team setting involving oral health care providers, staff, clients, parents, school officials and community leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with clients of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds as well as the ability to work with clients for whom English is a second language.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with diverse populations, ages and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to address conflict in a direct and professional manner.
  • Experience working with both in-person and telephonic interpreters in a clinical setting.

Desired Candidate:
  • In addition to the to the above, the most competitive will have these desired qualifications
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking and writing. This skill is highly desired but will not disqualify you from being considered.
  • Experience in a public/community health center and clinic setting desired.
  • Experience with using EPIC patient management software systems to register, check in, check out, collect payments, and schedule clients.
