Job summary

State of South Carolina’s Department of Environmental Services seeks an Area Director for the Beaufort region to lead a multidisciplinary team across air, land, and water. You will drive program strategy, foster interagency collaboration, and ensure regulatory consistency while maintaining high customer service and environmental protection throughout the region.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in the natural or physical sciences, public health or related technical field with five years of environmental experience, or a Bachelor's degree with six years of environmental experience.
• Degrees in related technical fields include earth or environmental sciences, chemistry, biology, physics, environmental engineering, geology, hydrology, natural resources management.
• Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by CHEA; transcripts may be requested.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate daily Beaufort regional staff across air, land, and water programs; oversee workload, resources, and program commitments.
• Provide training, guidance, and support to staff to ensure effective performance.
• Provide guidance to city, county, state, and federal officials and the public on environmental issues; engage communities and represent SCDES.
• Offer expertise to programs on complex environmental concerns including planning, policy matters, and special studies.
• Conduct or supervise investigations; support regional emergency operations readiness; respond to environmental incidents.
• Oversee administrative duties such as reporting, leave management, evaluations, travel, procurement, and equipment needs.
