Job summary

Vortex Companies, LLC seeks an experienced Regional Controller to lead financial operations across three business units in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana. This hands-on role partners with regional leaders, project managers, payroll, and Corporate Finance to improve profitability and reporting accuracy.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in construction accounting, expertise in job costing, monthly closes, NetSuite, and ERP systems, and can balance detailed execution with strategic process

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on accounting experience in construction.
• Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, journal entries, and monthly close.
• NetSuite experience required.
• Proficiency with Excel and ERP systems.
• Detail-oriented and accountable.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with operations teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfortable balancing hands-on execution with process improvement and operational support.

Responsibilities

• Provide financial leadership and accounting oversight for business units in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana.
• Serve as the primary financial partner to regional leadership, business unit leaders, project managers, and operations teams.
• Develop understanding of each business unit’s operations, customers, projects, and financial performance.
• Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support operational and strategic decision-making.
• Review financial results with business leaders and explain significant variances.
• Identify financial risks, margin concerns, and opportunities to improve profitability.
• Ensure consistent accounting practices, reporting processes, and internal controls across all units.
• Serve as the liaison between regional businesses and Corporate Finance.
• Review job cost reports with Project Managers to ensure accuracy in cost coding by job/phase.
• Maintain knowledge of gross profit, margin trends, and change orders.
• Partner with operations to identify cost issues and improve visibility across projects.
• Support leadership with insights to improve project performance.
• Refine reporting processes for clarity and timeliness of data.
• Monitor AR aging and identify at-risk accounts.
• Improve billing accuracy and collection timelines with PMs.
• Coordinate with subcontractors/clients to resolve billing issues.
• Document collection efforts and escalate cash flow risks when necessary.
• Enter invoices, accruals, and journal entries on time.
• Support monthly close activities and improve workflows.
• Process petty cash checks for apprentices and coordinate postings.
• Pay state and union training funds.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes and internal controls.
• Help implement improvements to increase efficiency.
