Job summary

Vortex Companies, LLC seeks an experienced Regional Controller to lead accounting for three regional units in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana. You will partner with operations, project managers, payroll, and Corporate Finance to improve performance and standardize practices.

The role covers job cost accounting, monthly close, forecasting, AR, union payroll oversight, and internal controls. A hands-on leader, you’ll drive systems improvements as we grow.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on accounting experience in construction.
  • Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, journal entries, and monthly close.
  • NetSuite experience required.
  • Proficiency with Excel and ERP systems.
  • Detail-oriented and accountable.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable balancing hands-on execution with process improvement and operational support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide financial leadership and accounting oversight for business units in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana.
  • Serve as the primary financial partner to regional leadership, business unit leaders, project managers, and operations teams.
  • Develop understanding of each unit's operations, customers, projects, and financial performance.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support decisions.
  • Review financial results with leaders and explain variances.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities to improve profitability.
  • Ensure consistent accounting practices, reporting processes, and internal controls.
  • Serve as liaison between regional businesses and Corporate Finance.
  • Review job cost reports with Project Managers for accuracy.
  • Maintain knowledge of projects including gross profit and margins.
  • Partner with operations to improve financial visibility across projects.
  • Support leadership with insights to improve project performance.
  • Refine reporting processes for clarity and timeliness.
  • Monitor AR aging and improve billing/collection timelines.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors/clients on billing issues.
  • Document collection efforts and escalate cash flow risks.
  • Enter invoices, accruals, and journals; support monthly close.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and controls.
  • Process petty cash checks and coordinate postings.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Regional Controller to provide financial leadership and accounting oversight for three business units located in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana.

This role will partner closely with regional operations leaders, project managers, payroll, and Corporate Finance to improve financial performance, ensure accurate reporting, and maintain consistent accounting practices across the region.

The Regional Controller will have responsibility for job cost accounting, monthly close, forecasting, accounts receivable, union payroll oversight, internal controls, and operational financial support.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who is comfortable working directly in the details while also providing strategic financial guidance to regional leadership. The ideal candidate is proactive, operationally focused, and able to improve systems and processes as the businesses continue to grow.

Key Responsibilities
Regional Financial Leadership
  • Provide financial leadership and accounting oversight for business units in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana
  • Serve as the primary financial partner to regional leadership, business unit leaders, project managers, and operations teams
  • Develop a strong understanding of each business unit’s operations, customers, projects, and financial performance
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support operational and strategic decision-making
  • Review financial results with business leaders and explain significant budget, forecast, and prior-year variances
  • Identify financial risks, margin concerns, and opportunities to improve profitability
  • Ensure consistent accounting practices, reporting processes, and internal controls across all three business units
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the regional businesses and Corporate Finance
Job Cost and Financial Reporting
  • Review job cost reports with Project Managers to ensure accuracy and proper cost coding by job and phase
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of assigned jobs including gross profit, margin trends, over/under billings, and pending change orders
  • Partner with operations teams to proactively identify cost issues and improve financial visibility across projects
  • Support leadership with financial insights that help improve project performance and operational decision‑making
  • Help refine reporting processes to improve clarity, accuracy, and timeliness of project financial data
Receivables and Cash Flow Management
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and identify at-risk accounts
  • Partner with Project Managers to improve billing accuracy and collection timelines
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and clients to resolve billing and payment issues
  • Document collection efforts and elevate cash flow risks when necessary
Accounting Operations and Close
  • Enter invoices, accruals, and journal entries accurately and on time
  • Support monthly close activities to ensure deadlines are met and financial results are accurate
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and strengthen financial processes as the business scales
  • Process petty cash checks for apprentices and coordinate posting with accounting
  • Pay state and union training funds
Process Improvement and Operational Support
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, and internal controls
  • Help implement improvements that increase efficiency and support the needs of a growing organization
  • Act as a resource to operations teams to ensure financial processes support project execution and profitability
