STV currently has an opening for a Structural Engineer /Bridge Inspection Team Leader in our Transportation Division of our Massachusetts office.

This position offers great career opportunities for a structural engineer with bridge inspector experience to be involved with bridge and culvert projects in all stages. This role will lead a team to inspect, identify maintenance needs, prepare reports and load ratings, develop repair and rehabilitation strategies, and collaborate with owners and contractors to preserve or replace structures. It is an excellent opportunity to become a subject matter expert within our growing inspection team and assume more leadership responsibilities. The role combines office and field work.

The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of bridge inspection and engineering industry practices, with strong problem-solving skills in design, analysis, and inspection challenges. Responsibilities include producing and modifying design calculations, technical reports, leading inspection teams, and preparing engineering plans and specifications for projects. The team leader will coordinate inspections with equipment suppliers and agencies, ensuring high-quality project delivery for various bridge and culvert projects, including replacements, rehabilitations, and preservation efforts.

Your Primary Responsibilities Will Be

  • Stay current with industry standards, codes, and best practices related to bridge inspection and maintenance.
  • Plan, perform, and supervise bridge inspections following NBI Standards and safety guidelines.
  • Deliver detailed inspection reports supporting the structure’s condition using client templates and electronic data systems.
  • Apply engineering principles to identify structural issues and recommend solutions.
  • Supervise and mentor inspection team members.
  • Collaborate on design calculations, estimates, specifications, and bid documents for rehabilitation and replacement projects.
  • Prepare load rating calculations and reports using analysis software.
  • Review structural shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and oversee field construction.
  • Monitor project budgets and schedules, assist in proposal development.
  • Participate in meetings and liaise with clients, consultants, vendors.

Your Qualifications And Skills Needed For This Position Are

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience focusing on bridge inspections.
  • Massachusetts PE license preferred; out-of-state licenses accepted.
  • Completion of FHWA-NHI-130055 (Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges).
  • Experience with structural design, load ratings, and analysis software.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong safety record and physical ability for fieldwork in various weather conditions, including working at heights and in water.
  • Excellent communication skills; willingness to travel within Massachusetts; valid driver’s license.

Our Preferred Qualifications And Skills Of The Right Candidate

  • Additional FHWA/NHI training (Fracture Critical, Moveable Bridge, etc.).
  • SPRAT Certified Rope Access Technician.
  • Experience with MassDOT Bridge Inspection Management Systems.
  • Willingness to travel outside Massachusetts occasionally.

Compensation Range

$109,771.86 - $146,362.48
