Job summary

Gift of Life Donor Program is seeking a Referral Coordinator to join our team in the Eastern PA/Delaware region. You will coordinate organ and tissue referrals, assess donor suitability with hospital staff, and obtain consent discussions with families.

Requirements include EMT-P certification or nursing/BS in a medically related field, ACLS/PALS or EMT-P certification, and 3+ years in critical care/trauma or 6 years as a Paramedic; driving in adverse weather is required.

Qualifications

  • EMT-P certification or Diploma, associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing or a BS in a medically related field is required.
  • ACLS or PALS or EMT-P certification is required.
  • At least three years’ experience in a critical care/trauma, surgical or comparable clinical environment working as a Registered Nurse or six years as a Paramedic is required.

Responsibilities

  • Rotates 48-hour and 72-hour call, during which you must respond to referrals of potential organ donors from hospitals by reporting for duty at specified hospitals within the GLDP service area.
  • Evaluates potential organ donors with AOC based on current and past medical and social history.
  • Evaluate for donor designation, hemodilution and ABO confirmation.
  • In consultation with the AOC and following established guidelines, may make medical management recommendations to the medical and nursing staff of potential organ donors to maintain organ perfusion and oxygenation.
  • Assess with the medical staff the care plan, neurological & hemodynamic status, and family communication plan.
  • Must be able to drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Review all assessments with the AOC and request labs per Gift of Life protocol.
  • Obtain appropriate blood specimens for serological and HLA testing and ME evaluation; communicate with outside agencies to facilitate laboratory testing.
  • May coordinate Operating Room recoveries.
  • Occasionally speak with potential donor families and obtain authorization and medical/social history.

What We Want for a Referral Coordinator:

EMT-P certification or Diploma, associate or bachelor's degree in nursing or a BS in a medically related field with a passion for saving or changing a life.

The Referral Coordinator will ensure timely on-site response, assessment, and evaluation of potential organ donors, as well as interacting with the hospital staff to set-up the family approach process.

Some of what you'll be doing as a Referral Coordinator:
