Job description

Summary

The Reference Librarian & Assistant Professor of Law Library is responsible for legal research instruction to all Barry Law students, teaching classes in the LLM and/or JD program, providing workshops, and instructing small groups and individuals on any topic of legal research. The position also assists law faculty with educational technology, scholarship submission and promotion, and identifying research materials. It provides both traditional and virtual reference and research instruction to all library patrons—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the bar. This is an administrative and tenure‑track position, though the holder is not a faculty member on the tenure track.

Responsibilities
  • Provide reference and research assistance to library patrons:
    Consult with patrons in person, by telephone, email, or video conferencing
    Conduct reference interviews to determine the exact nature of the question
    Advise patrons about useful resources to answer the question
    Teach patrons how to use resources, if necessary
    Serve specific reference shifts as assigned by the Associate Director
  • Provide legal research and legal information‑literacy education to the Barry Law community:
    Conduct guest lectures in the first year and legal research & writing classes as needed
    Plan and create research lessons using lib‑guides, workshops, and video
    Provide one‑on‑one instruction to students and faculty
    Stay abreast of changes in legal technology
  • Participate in the Faculty Liaison Program:
    Act as the point of contact between the library and assigned faculty members
    Assist and instruct faculty with Canvas, video conferencing, and other instructional technology
    Consult faculty on scholarship agendas, research resources, and locating materials
    Train research assistants and faculty LbRs
  • Teach graduate‑level for‑credit courses in the LLM and/or JD program
  • Develop instruction and programming on artificial intelligence and legal technology:
    Review new AI and legal tech products and recommend adoption
    Act as a local expert for faculty and students
  • Support institutional repository and faculty scholarship:
    Train each journal’s incoming editorial board on library resources and services
    Maintain currency and accuracy of faculty scholarship in the institutional repository
    Promote faculty scholarship through the library website, blogs, and marketing
    Assist faculty with submitting scholarship for publication on platforms such as Scholastica and SSRN
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Law School, Law Library Director, Associate Director of Law Library, or Head of Technical Services
Qualifications
  • Both a Juris Doctor and an MLS degree are required
  • One to three (1‑3) years of related experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legal research resources, expert skill with Westlaw and Lexis, and an ability to learn and teach other legal information technologies such as HeinOnline and ProQuest
  • Strong consulting skills to analyze complex problems and identify appropriate resources
  • Project management experience and the ability to work independently
  • High proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, email, and database management
  • Basic knowledge of library equipment—computers, printers, copiers, monitors
  • Excellent communication and customer‑service skills, patience, friendliness, and calmness in challenging situations
