Job summary

The Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport, NY seeks a Reference Librarian to provide professional reference and information services in person, by phone, and by email. The role includes collection development, cataloging, and supporting the Library of Things while leading innovative programs and community partnerships.

Requires MLS/MLIS and NYS Professional Librarian certification. The position offers a 35-hour workweek with evening/weekend shifts and comprehensive benefits, including health

Qualifications

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Ability to obtain/possess NYS Professional Librarian's Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide reference and information services in person, by phone, or email.
  • Assist with collection development, weeding, and cataloging of Adult Nonfiction and related formats.
  • Help develop and maintain the Library of Things collection.
  • Assist with library circulation tasks and technology training.
  • Support the Library in becoming a Certified Sustainable Library.
  • Develop programs, exhibits, and special projects.
  • Coordinate with outside programs and vendors.
  • Monitor area statistics and budget; supervise staff and interns as needed.

Salary: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 Annually

The Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport, NY seeks a friendly, service-oriented individual to fill a full-time position as the Library’s Reference Librarian. This position reports to the Library Director.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide professional and friendly service to patrons seeking reference, local history, or other library information, in-person, over the phone, or via email.
  • Participate in collection development, weeding, cataloging, and organization of the Adult Nonfiction Collection, including (but not limited to) reference works, periodicals, books in Spanish, and adult DVD collections.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the Library of Things collection
  • Participate in library circulation activities and offer technology assistance and/or training
  • Act as co-lead of the Library’s efforts toward becoming a Certified Sustainable Library
  • Be innovative in developing and executing programs, exhibits, or special projects
  • Ability to interact with outside programmers and other vendors
  • Maintain and report on area statistics and budget
  • Light supervision of support staff and Library interns, and participates in training of new employees
  • Attend professional development activities (such as offsite meetings, trainings, and conferences)
  • May perform other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational and scheduling skills
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in technology and willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to work independently, follow through with projects, and meet deadlines
  • Be a team player, be flexible, and be willing to help in all library departments
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and lead by example
  • Spanish-speaking a plus
Required experience and training:
  • ALA-Accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS or MLIS) and ability to gain/possess a New York State Professional Librarian’s Certificate
Hours, Wages, and Benefits
  • Minimum starting salary: $60,000
  • This position works 35 hours/week, including evening and weekend hours as needed.
  • NYSHIP health insurance is 100% paid for individuals; paid vacation, personal, and sick time; 403(b) with employer match

The Floyd Memorial Library is an association library and is not subject to civil service requirements.
