Job summary

The City of Weslaco is seeking a Recycling Center Assistant to provide customer service and handle recyclable materials at the Weslaco Recycling Center. You will drop off materials at vendor facilities and pick up recyclables at City facilities.

Duties include operating during events and performing related tasks as needed. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, 1–3 years of experience, and a valid Class C driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Must have a current valid Class C Driver's License and be insurable.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for delivery and pick-up of containers and trailers to participants in the city's recycling program at various city buildings and parks.
• Oversee the Recycling Center during operational hours and assist incoming customers as needed.
• Deliver recyclable items to corresponding vendors.
• Maintain Recycling Center, equipment, and vehicles.
• Oversee the recycling program during special events.
• Perform other duties as assigned; hours may extend beyond normal business hours, including nights and weekends.

Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Essential Job Functions

• Responsible for the delivery and pick-up of containers and trailers to participants in the city's recycling program at various city buildings and parks.
• Responsible for overlooking the Recycling Center during operational hours and assist incoming customers as needed.
• Delivery of recyclable items to corresponding vendors.
• Responsible for proper maintenance of Recycling Center, equipment, and vehicles.
• Will be responsible of overlooking the recycling program when participating in special events.
• Employee may be assigned other duties in addition to those listed; duties may change according to the changing needs of the city.
• May be required to respond during emergency situations.
• Maintain regular and prompt attendance, physically present to work.
• Performs other similar or related duties as assigned.
• Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

• Must have a high school diploma; or equivalent.
• Have one (1) to three (3) years of experience in the field.
• Must have a current valid Class "C" Driver's License and be insurable.

• Safe and effective operation of hand tools and light equipment.
• Ability to follow directions and to perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of time.
• Ability to interact effectively with co-workers.
• Recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are taken to ensure employee safety.
• Carry out duties in busy, public congested areas.
• Employee must have the ability to make good judgment when making decisions regarding their job duties and be able to have the following mental functions: reading, simple, math calculations, and withstanding moderate amounts of stress.
• Proficient motor skills to operate motor vehicles, tools, and light equipment in an efficient and safe manner.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

• Moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily. Will include lifting, moving, and positioning/loading heavy objects (up to 100lbs).
• Work also involves pulling, pushing, remain stationary or move about the full workday.
• Driving in adverse weather troublesome road conditions may be required.
• Employee must be able to work in the presence of heat, cold, odors, chemicals, noise, vibration, and rain during inclement weather.
