Job summary

Wilson Medical Center is seeking a Recreational Therapist on a PRN basis to join our hospital team. The role involves assessing patients, establishing therapy goals, and coordinating activities to support socialization and well‑being.

You will participate in discharge planning and communicate resources to patients and families. Requirements include a Bachelor’s in Recreational Therapy, current BLS, and Handle with Care within 3 months.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreational Therapy or related field is required.
• Current BLS certification and Handle with Care training within 3 months of hire are required.
• Experience in hospital setting is preferred; experience with treatment planning is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Conducts assessment and establishes recreational therapy treatment goals.
• Pre-certifies patient care and reviews ongoing care authorization.
• Evaluates patient progress and effectiveness of interventions.
• Formulates a goal-directed plan of care with the multidisciplinary team.
• Updates Treatment Plan weekly or more often as needed.
• Coordinates activities to encourage socialization and monitor patient response.
• Assists with discharge planning and informs patients and families about leisure activities and resources.

How you'll contribute

A Recreational Therapist who excels in this role:

• Conducts assessment and establishes recreational therapy treatment goals and objectives to meet the individual needs of patients.
• Pre-certifies patient care. Conducts ongoing reviews to authorize continued care.
• Conducts ongoing reviews to authorize continued care.
• Evaluates each patient's progress and the effectiveness of recreational therapy interventions.
• Formulates a goal-directed plan of care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary treatment team utilizing assessment date from the Interdisciplinary Assessments.
• Updates Treatment Plan weekly or more often as needed.
• Coordinates therapeutic recreation activities for both large and small groups to observe patient response and encourage socialization.
• Assists with development of discharge plan in timely and documented standards.
• Provides patient and patient's family with information regarding leisure life styles and creates an awareness of recreational resources in their community.

What we're looking for

• Education: Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Therapy or related field required. Master's Degree preferred.
• Certifications: Current BLS & Handle with Care (within 3 months of hire) required
• Experience: One year of experience in Recreational Therapy in a hospital setting preferred, experience in treatment planning and implementation highly desirable.
• License: Current Recreational Therapist license.
• Skills and Abilities: Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
