Overview

The Acute Geriatric Psychiatry Hospital’s (AGPH) Activity Coordinator facilitates therapeutic group and individual treatments, communicates effectively with the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDT) and assists with the completion of mandatory documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The AGPH AC works in conjunction with all members of the interdisciplinary team to provide active treatment to help accomplish patient goals to move the patient toward their highest level of wellness. The AGPH AC works under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy.

  • Shift: 16 hours/week [6:45 AM - 3:15 PM
  • Shift Days: Saturday and Sunday
  • Pay Rate: Starting at $32/hr

Overview

The AGPH AC works in conjunction with all members of the interdisciplinary team to provide active treatment to help accomplish patient goals to move the patient toward their highest level of wellness. The AGPH AC works under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy.

Essential Functions

  • Therapeutic Treatment/ Relationship: Provides group treatments and one on one visits on a pre-scheduled and as-needed basis including but not limited to:
    • Leads group or individualized treatment programs including, but not limited to: expressive arts therapies, coping skills, recreational, social, spiritual, educational, leisure skills, etc.
    • Easily connects with all patients regardless of symptoms/ behaviors in a therapeutic manner to promote patient’s highest level of wellness.
    • Ensures that all patients are treated with dignity and respect.
    • Can maintain an emotionally and physically safe space in the milieu with the ability to set limits in a therapeutic manner.
    • Provides supportive counseling, mental health education, stress management and coping skills education in the group or 1:1 treatment.
    • Educates patients about the role of meaningful activity in wellness.
    • Provides empathic and active listening.


  • Documentation: Documents proficiently in the (EMR) in accordance to State and Federal Regulations and under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy. Documentation may include but is not limited to:
    • Admission assessments & admission notes.
    • Progress notes at least weekly.
    • Individual and group participation treatment notes.
    • Treatment plan.
  • Communication:
    • Provides information about patients to members of the IDT either verbally and/ or in writing. IDT includes Psychiatrist, Internist, Nurses, CNA’s, Social Service Staff.
    • Able to communicate effectively with other Jewish Home and Rehab Center department staff.
    • Immediately notifies appropriate staff of patient needs or concerning symptoms and behaviors.
    • Able to express self clearly in both written and spoken communication.
  • Other:
    • Completes in-services as assigned.
    • Works with the recreation therapist to maintain a daily / monthly activity calendar.
    • Supports volunteers or interns working in the AGPH.
    • Accounts for all sharps, equipment, and supplies at the end of each group.
    • Secures and cleans all appropriate materials in a locked area at the end of each group session.
    • Understands and follows all rules, guidelines, and protocols outlined in the SFCJL JHRC Employee Handbook.
    • Cover tasks independently in the event of Director of Recreation Therapy time away from unit.
    • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Recreation Therapy.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in area related to field (recreational therapy, psychology, health care, geriatrics, social work, or art/drama therapist) is preferred .
  • A minimum of one year of experience working in the field of geriatrics is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working in an acute psychiatric hospital is preferred.
  • Ability to type and navigate the EMR and learn new systems as needed.
  • CPI – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (completed within 3-6 months of start date).
  • Experience planning and implementing a variety of individual and group therapeutic activities.
  • Ability to collaborate with others.
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, families/responsible party, IDT.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations governing acute psychiatric hospital and mental health.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Desire to work with older people with mental health diagnoses.
  • Ability to generate enthusiasm and cooperation from others.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to cultural diversity and trauma informed care.
  • Ability, under the direction of the Director of Recreation Therapy, to complete all mandated documentation promptly.
  • Comfortable in a fast paced and often unpredictable environment.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to recruit participants of varying physical ability, facilitate energetic treatment programs and help with participants exiting safely after programs without fatigue.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry.
  • Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles over time without fatigue.
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, sit, and reach.
  • Fine motor skills.
  • Good visual and auditory acuity.
