Under the general supervision of the Director of Recreation and the Assistant Director of Recreation assists in the coordination of a comprehensive public recreation program for the community including oversight of youth and adult sport programs, summer/vacation camps and special events. Coordinates, implements, evaluates, and leads programming, marketing, and overall support for the Recreation Department. This position will require a high degree of time management and flexibility as evening and weekend work is often required.
Independently manages all aspects of assigned programs including department run youth and adult sport programs (Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Zumba, Yoga), waterfront/lifeguard staff, summer camps, and day trips.
Provides on-site supervision to evening and weekend special programs/events, summer camps, waterfront and other programs/events as assigned.
Participates in administrative office duties including creating reports, processing participant registrations in person and by phone as needed.
Recruits, supervises, trains, evaluates and schedules seasonal and part-time employees for assigned programs.
Assists with the management of the payroll function for seasonal/part-time employees.
Attends all evening and weekend activities as required. Manages the inventory and storage of program supplies and equipment for each program area as assigned.
Develops marketing and public relations material both electronically and in print through program brochures, flyers, press releases, posters, website and social media marketing campaigns and e-mail systems.
Manages the Recreation Department website, registration program and social media presence ensuring proper messaging to reach departmental objectives; coordinates information to be posted and ensures that each site is current providing residents with general and time-sensitive information, to nurture community interaction, and to maintain a positive public image.
Reviews and evaluates the success of programs and makes recommendations for continuation or cancellation.
Prepares statistical and narrative reports to the Director.
Participates in the development and implementation of short and long-term goals and objectives for programs and special events.
Manages the investigation and resolution of procedural, operational and other work-related problems by communicating with and responding appropriately to a challenging and diverse public in answering questions, explaining Department policies and handling complaints. Keeps Director advised of issues and trends.
Attends events and programs as needed and enforces Department rules and policies situationally as required.
Attends educational conferences to keep current.
Performs additional job functions, tasks, and duties as necessary and/or requested.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation and leisure services administration, and related public administration.
Knowledge of recreational, cultural, and social needs of a community.
Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to prepare and present statistical and narrative reports in oral and written form.
Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of various ages and abilities.
Ability to provide clear instruction, relay safety protocols, motivate staff and participants and maintain safety.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Knowledge of social trends and indicators and their impact on recreation policy.
Ability to plan short-term and long-term recreational programs.
Ability to effectively recruit, assign, train and supervise assigned personnel.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, other agencies, and the public.
Ability to maintain confidential records and information.
Ability to operate department computer with software applications.
Operates a motor vehicle, recreation equipment, personal computer, and standard office equipment.
Sitting at a desk, walking or standing at a specified work area and performing required work tasks continuously for extended periods of time; traveling continuously and frequently to recreation service program sites; physically inspecting and supervising the operation and maintenance of recreation facilities; moving boxes and equipment; occasionally required to move and/or lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds; drives a motor vehicle.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation or Leisure Studies with three (3) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current ARC Lifeguard Training Certificate (LGT) or ability to obtain the certification within 6 months of initial hire, and (WSI) certification within 1 year of initial hire.
