Job summary

Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks & Recreation Department seeks a friendly attendant to help run daily programs and special events. You will assist in set-up, take-down, facility cleaning, and in enforcing safety rules for patrons.

Weekend and evening shifts are required. You will handle passes, cash and card payments at the point of sale, supervise locker rooms, and assist with marketing and leading park activities.

Responsibilities

• Issue facility drop-in passes and enforce safety rules.
• Provide routine cleanup and maintenance of locker rooms and seating.
• Clean, sharpen, and maintain ice skates and equipment.
• Render emergency first aid to injured users.
• Inspect facilities and report damage.
• Inform participants of facility rules and assist with enforcement.
• Check in/out patrons at locker rooms.
• Assist with setup and takedown for events.
• Open facilities daily and secure them.
• Assist with developing, marketing and leading programs.
• Perform custodial duties as assigned.
• Operate POS, process cash/check/credit card sales and take reservations using scheduling software.

Job description

Responsible to ensure that all recreational activities are accomplished in a safe and orderly manner for the Parks & Recreation Department. Assists in set-up, take-down and facility cleaning for special events. Assists in the development and implementation of recreational programming. Works weekends and evenings.

REPORTS TO: Facility Supervisor

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None

• Issue facility drop-in passes and monitor/enforce proper safety rules in the facility.
• Provide routine clean up and general maintenance of locker rooms and ice arena seating.
• Clean, sharpen, and maintain ice skates and equipment.
• Render emergency first aid to injured or stricken facility users.
• Inspect facilities to detect and report damage.
• Inform participants of facility rules and ensure that scheduled activities are enforced. Respond to patrons' questions/needs and refer to manager when appropriate.
• Responsible for checking patrons in and out of locker rooms on sign-up sheet.
• Assist in the setup and take-down of facilities for special events.
• Open facilities for daily activities; secure and close facilities.
• Assist with developing, marketing and leading programs at park facilities.
• Perform custodial duties as assigned.
• Operate a point of sale system, process cash, check, and credit card sales and take facility reservations using recreation scheduling software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• 1. A minimum of six months of work experience dealing with the public, operating a personal computer and/or cash register, and handling cash.
• 2. Must be able to achieve Standard First Aid, Adult CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent) within three (3) months of hire.
• 3. Must be at least 21 years old.
• 4. PREFERRED: Ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license and to meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough’s insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• 1. Knowledge of basic math computations.
• 2. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:

Does not supervise; many minor problems daily, and an occasional major one where supervisor is usually required for help and instruction; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require minimal effort to recover.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

A recreational facility where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions where accidents/hazards are negligible; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.). This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
