Job summary

City of Shelby is seeking a Recreation Programs Supervisor to organize, supervise, and schedule a variety of recreation activities for all age groups in Shelby, NC. The role involves developing calendars, registering participants, and maintaining records under the Recreation Program Superintendent.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree with related coursework, CPR/First Aid, and multiple certifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in recreation, health, physical education, or related field.
  • Moderate experience in one or more of the major fields of organized recreation programs, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications upon hire.
  • Certified to teach ARC Lifeguarding Training, land aerobics, and water aerobics.
  • NCRPA membership within six months of hire.
  • NAYS certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid commercial driver's license in NC.

Job description

Performs difficult technical work organizing, supervising, and scheduling a variety of recreation programs, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Recreation Program Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over all personnel within the team.

  • Organizes, administers, and supervises a variety of fitness, and recreational activities for all age groups.
  • Schedules programs and events; develops activity calendars; registers participants.
  • Maintains records and files; prepares reports.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs tours and trips for a variety of recreation programs and special events.
  • Works with co-sponsors and a variety of interest groups in planning and implementing and recreation programs and special events.
  • Oversees, selects, trains, directs summer day camp staff and aquatics staff
  • Oversees fitness program;
  • Oversees special needs and senior citizen programs.
  • Prepares and maintains information on City webpage and social media.
  • Assists with department budget preparation.
  • Serves on various fitness, or recreational associations, boards, or committees.
  • Attends department staff meetings, program workshops, and related professional development activities.

Bachelor’s degree with coursework in recreation, health, physical education, or related field and moderate experience in one or more of the major fields of organized recreation programs, or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPR and First Aid certifications upon hire. Certified to teach American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training course, land aerobics, and water aerobics. Obtain North Carolina Recreation and Park Association (NCRPA) membership within six months of hire. Obtain National Alliance of Youth Sports (NAYS) certification with one year of hire. Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Thorough knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully conduct recreation programs; thorough knowledge of the methods involved in organizing, conducting, promoting and supervising recreation activities; thorough knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in recreation work; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, league and program participants, public safety and school officials, and the general public.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
