Job summary

Mission Oaks Recreation & Park District is seeking a Recreation Leader to supervise a group of school-age children in an after-school program. You will work under the Recreation Coordinator, delivering enrichment, sports, arts, and crafts activities with a team, typically 4–6 hours on weekdays.

The role is seasonal, part-time, and at-will, with a schedule that varies by enrollment for the 2026-2027 year. You will be part of a mission-driven team at Del Dayo Elementary School and Swanston

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 17 to apply; prior experience with children preferred but not required.
  • Must be fluent in English; Spanish skills a plus.
  • State laws require background check and TB test clearance; driving license optional.

Responsibilities

Job description

SITE LOCATIONS:

  • Swanston Community Center
JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the direct supervision of a group of 4-12-year-old children in an after-school program.Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leader works with a team to oversee a group of students, providing enrichment and recreational activities.The Recreation Leader will be assigned a variable schedule that will typically require 4-6 hours per weekday between the hours of8:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Schedules and hours will vary based on enrollment in the 2026-2027 school yearprogram. Theprogram season will end on June 8, 2026.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

The Recreation Leader is expected to work effectively under minimal supervision. Work within a framework of standard District policies and procedures.

EXAMPLE OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This position is classified as a seasonal, part-time, at-will position. Appointments are made on an annual basis and are subject to program enrollment, budget availability, operational needs, and satisfactory job performance. The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive experience.
  • Responsible for leading a daily group activity and keeping participants engaged at all times.
  • Responsible for inventory and orderliness of program equipment/supplies/storage areas.
  • Prepares the room or space forthe programeach day; has all supplies ready for activities.
  • Distributesnacksandassistwith concessions.
  • Maintainrecords andcomplete all reports as necessaryin a timely manner.
  • Be familiar with and uphold behavior policies and safety procedures for all activities.
  • Attendall staff meetings,trainings,and workshops.
  • Responsible for notifying and reporting any problems or concerns of parents and/or children to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Market program at schools andspecial events; help to recruit participants.
  • Perform other program related duties as assigned.
  • Prepares, leads, andparticipatesin recreational activities, both active and passive, for school-age children such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and songs at an assignedlocation.
  • Demonstrates a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude with the children, parents, andMORPDpersonnel in day-to-day activities.
  • Acts as a liaison between the parents, children,staffand Recreation Coordinator.
  • Follows District policies and procedures.
  • Follows safety procedures andrendersfirst aid asrequired; responds to emergencies as they arise and follows emergency procedures;assistsProgramCoordinatorsto ensure that accidents and incidents are promptly documented and reported.
  • Actively encourage and live theDistrict'smission.
  • Communicate, delegate, review, and implement planned recreational activities.
  • Conduct regular safety checksofyourarea, andcorrect hazardous situationsimmediately.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of recreational activities appropriate for school-age children. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, parents, and volunteers. Leadership and organizational skills. Ability to use independent judgment and takeappropriate actionto ensure children's and staff's safety. Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations.

  1. Minimum Educationrequired: This is an entry-level position. A valid work permit may berequiredfor applicants under the age of 18.
  2. Minimum Experiencerequired:Previousexperience working with children (volunteer work, babysitting, playing sports, coaching, etc.) is preferred (but notrequired)
  3. Other requirements: State law requires all selected applicants 18 and overmust befingerprinted and pass a pre-employment background check. A TB test clearance isrequiredfor all selected applicants. Reliable transportation to and from work.First Aid/CPR/AED Training or willingness to complete/recertify (preferred)
Licenses/Certification:
  • Preferred possession of a valid class C California Driver’s license.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desired but notrequired.
Environmental Conditions:
  • Outdoor recreational facilities; frequent public contact; exposure to sun, heat, and inclement weather. The schedule may vary.
Physical Conditions:
  • Strength, mobility, and stamina to bend, reach, stretch, stand, kneel, walk, run, stoop, lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to50 pounds whilemonitoringchildren andparticipatingin camp activities. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • The job involves 30% standing and 70% walking or active movement.
  • Must occasionally have the ability to feel the attributes of objects by touch; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; and be able to walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and stand.
  • Strength, mobility, and stamina to perform various physical activities.
  • Hearing and speech are adequate to communicate in person and over the phone.
  • Vision adequate tomonitorchildren and read fine print.
  • Manual dexterity to grasp and hold objects, use fine manipulation, write, andoperatethe telephone.
  • Frequentlyparticipatesin strenuous physical activities, such as running, sports, and other related camp activities, in outdoor locations. Frequent monitoring of children requiring the ability to detect and respond to emergencies and provide CPR or First Aid asrequired.
Education and Experience
  • Must be at least 17 to apply, withpreviousexperience working with children (volunteer work, babysitting, etc.). Mustpossessa basic understanding of elementary math and language. Must be fluent in English; Spanish skills a plus.
Equipment Used:
  • Telephone, equipment cart, arts and crafts supplies, and sports equipment.
Transportation Requirements:
  • Must have reliable transportation to commute topark & school locations within theDistrict.
HOURS AND PAY RATE:
  • 10-20 hoursper week
  • Generally,anywhere: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from8:30am – 7pm (Modified hours for training and other meetings when necessary)
Terms of Employment:
  • This is a seasonal position. This position endsonJune8, 2027.
