Job summary

City of Modesto is hiring a Part-Time Recreation Leader to support City programs across multiple locations. The role plans, organizes, and conducts activities for adults, youth, and special events in parks, centers, and facilities.

Responsibilities include reporting, training attendance, and customer service while maintaining safety and program integrity. Work flexible shifts; no benefits; at-will employment. Must be 15+ with required First Aid/CPR training.

Qualifications

This is an hourly part-time position, limited to working 1,000 hours annually. This position is non-benefited and is designated as a non-classified, at-will position.

DEFINITION

The Recreation Leader is responsible to plan, organize, and conduct activities for City sponsored programs and facilities such as adult and youth recreation sports or activities, special events, and camps as directed.

Positions are at various City locations. Staff are typically used in the following programs or locations:

  • Adaptive Programs
  • Aquatics Programs
  • Day Camp Program
  • Maddux Youth Center Facility
  • Mary Grogan Soccer Complex Neighborhood
  • Center at Marshall Park
  • Park Programs
  • Rental Facilities
  • Senior Center Facility
  • Sports Programs
  • Special Events

Essential Functions

Plan, organize, and conduct assigned programs.

Maintain and submit detailed reports and records, as required.

Attend meetings and training sessions, as required.

Attend trainings and fulfill duties and responsibilities for cash handling, if requested.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.

Marginal Functions

Exercise proper program safety practices and procedures while carrying out programs.

Supervise program participants while guiding participants in leisure and social activities.

Ensure all staff and volunteers adhere to all City and Department program rules and guidelines; provide necessary discipline and accurate records of all incidents.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of
  • Practices and techniques for favorable public relations, group cooperation and programming for participants.
  • Principles and practices of recordkeeping and scheduling.
  • Recreational, social, and cultural needs of the community.
  • Light custodial maintenance techniques.

  • Run forward, backward and laterally.
  • Perform light custodial maintenance tasks.
  • Travel from worksite to worksite as needed.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Experience

Volunteer or paid work experience with children, teens, seniors, and/or disabled individuals is desirable.

Training

Required to attend, participate and complete all trainings as assigned. Including, but not limited to, Mandated Reporter training.

Licenses/Certificates
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate
  • Certifications must have an in-person, instructor-led skills session with hands and breaths training.
Additional Requirements

Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at time of application.

Mobility: frequent performance moderate manual labor; frequent sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time; occasional bending, twisting, kneeling or squatting. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: occasional exposure to loud noises and large groups of people.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year-round weather conditions. Duties may include some recreation-related field noise. Work often occurs at remote locations. Positions may require some overtime, holiday, evening, or weekend work and travel is rare.
