Job summary

This hourly role is limited to approximately 29 hours per week up to 1,000 hours annually or 40 hours per week for up to 6 months, not benefitted and at-will.

You will assist with aquatics delivery, setup, supervision, and daily operations per policy and training, while maintaining safety and reporting as required.

Qualifications

The City of Modesto is looking for an enthusiastic Aquatics Program Leader to help make a splash in our community programs! In this role, you’ll deliver top-notch swim instruction, support daily pool operations, and bring energy to lessons, camps, fitness classes, special events, and more. This is an hourly position, limited to working approximately 29 hours per week up to 1,000 hours annually or working approximately 40 hours per week up to 6 months and no more than 1,000 hours annually. This position is non-benefited and is designated as a non-classified, at-will position.

The Aquatics Program Leader serves as a swim instructor and slide attendant and assists with the delivery and operation of aquatics programs including but not limited to swim lessons, camps, fitness classes, special events, party rentals, and assists with set up, supervision, and daily operations in accordance with established policies and training.

Assist in instructing and monitoring activities for aquatics.

Maintain and submit detailed reports and records, as required.

Attend meetings and training sessions, as required.

Attend trainings and fulfill duties and responsibilities for cash handling, if requested.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.

When assigned as Swim Instructor:

Teach or assist with swim lessons following the approved curriculum.

Maintain class rosters and communicate progress to parents.

Set up and maintain safe teaching areas.

When assigned as Slide Attendant:

Monitor ride entry and exit points for safety compliance.

Enforce rules related to ride safety, height and rider spacing.

Coordinate with lifeguards to maintain consistent flow and safety.

Marginal Functions:

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

Practices and techniques for favorable public relations, group cooperation and programming for participants.

Principles and practices of recordkeeping and scheduling.

Recreational, social, and cultural needs of the community.

Light custodial maintenance techniques.

Ability to:

Read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions and to perform basic arithmetic.

Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.

Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.

Coordinate and schedule a variety of activities.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.

Prepare reports and records as required.

Work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Lift and carry heavy objects.

Run forward, backward and laterally.

Perform light custodial maintenance tasks.

Travel from worksite to worksite as needed.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
Experience:

6 months of experience teaching swim lessons, working with children, working with recreational programs or event planning.

Training:

Required to attend, participate and complete all trainings as assigned. Including, but not limited to, Mandated Reporter training.

Licenses/Certificates:
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certificate
Additional Requirements:

Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at time of application.

NOTE: If offered a position, you will be required to be fingerprinted before final appointment, in compliance with Section 10911-5 of the Education Code and Section 5164 of the Public Resources Code. In addition, it is the City’s policy to not hire individuals convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude, including, but not limited to:

  • An offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Penal Code Section 290 (sex offender); an offense involving sexual misconduct with children; an offense involving prostitution (including solicitation).
  • An offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Health and Safety Code Section 11590 (controlled substance offenders) or any felony offense involving drugs (including possession, sale, distribution, transporting, or conspiracy).
  • A felony offense involving the use of force and violence upon a person or another, or a misdemeanor offense for same within the last five (5) years.

Mobility: frequent performance of moderate manual labor; frequent sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time; occasional bending, twisting, kneeling or squatting; moving forward, backward or laterally. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: occasional exposure to loud noises and frequent exposure to large groups of people.

Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year-round weather conditions. Work often occurs at remote locations. Positions may require some holiday, evening, or weekend work.
