The Town of Herndon is seeking a Recreation Assistant to support its Parks and Recreation department. The role involves engaging with Community Center patrons, handling transactions, assisting in program promotion, and performing clerical duties. Ideal candidates will have strong customer service skills and previous experience in similar roles.
The Town of Herndon boasts a unique balance of strong sense of community and being a next generation small town and each employee is pivotal in providing exceptional services to our citizens. The Town has an immediate need for a Recreation Assistant in the Parks and Recreation department.
T he purpose of the position is to provide information to Community Center patrons, sell facility passes, services, concessions, and accessories, register participants in activities, and assist other staff in the promotion and support of department and town programs and activities. Employees in this classification perform responsible clerical work. Position is responsible for data entry, collecting forms and fees for reservations, rentals, and vending services; coordinating dates and times for center use; and providing program and activity information to patrons. Performs related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Providing excellent customer service; providing information or referral to citizens. Answering phone calls for department and town services and activities; taking and delivering messages as necessary; assisting customers in person with questions, information and forms completion
• Actively promoting department’s programs.
• Providing complete and accurate data entry of participant information and program registrations.
• Receiving and processing payments in person; counting money and making change as needed. Selling daily admissions, passes, pool accessories, tickets and concession items; processing all payments in automated cash receipts system; balancing cash, checks and credit transactions daily and generating daily accounting reports.
• Providing information and accepting applications for room rentals; processing court reservations for racquetball, tennis and wallball.
• Providing administrative support to operations staff and to the department in general.
• Monitoring center activities as directed, ensuring compliance with admission requirements.
• Consistently enforcing building rules and regulations.
• Coordinating set-up and implementation of birthday party packages, and assisting customers during these events.
• Assisting in the evacuation of the community center during emergencies as directed.
• Performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• One (1) to two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving customer service, cashiering and clerical work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, or,
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Schedule:
Mostly evening and weekends

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
