Job summary

King William County is seeking a part-time/temporary staff member to assist with an After School Recreation Program for the 2025–2026 school year. The role runs weekdays 2:30pm–6:00pm, August 2025 through May 2026, with occasional extensions. duties include planning activities, homework help, and supervising children in grades K-5.

CPR/First Aid certification is required; prior experience with youth programs is preferred. A high school diploma or GED is preferred.

Job description

This is a part-time/temporary field position as needed for the After School Recreation Program. The incumbent performs routine tasks and fieldwork to assist with the planning and implementation of an After School Recreation Program. Program runs from August 2025 – May 2026, Monday through Friday, 2:30pm until 6:00pm, when school is in session.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of walking, moving rapidly, throwing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and while playing and interacting with children.

  • Assists with the planning and implementation of an after-school recreation program for up to 125 children in grades K- 5.
  • Provides homework assistance as needed to program participants.
  • Leads programs, activities or special events with children participating in the program. Program areas may include sports, games, arts & crafts, nature, music, drama.
  • Assist with inventory control, management, and care of recreation supplies and equipment.
  • Must be able to report to work location by 2:30pm every weekday to assist with setting-up for program.
  • Must be able to work until 5:00pm every day with possible extensions until 6:00pm.
  • Must be available to work every day school is in session for the entire schoolyear.

Knowledge of community youth recreation programming preferred. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions required. Ability to follow rules and program planning. Must have the ability to lead activities in various program areas. Must have the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and to assist in maintaining discipline and/or control. Must be able to meet and deal tactfully with the public and parents.

High school diploma/GED preferred. Experience working with children in a recreation setting desired. CPR/ First Aid certification required.
