What Does a Recreation Advisor Actually Do?Our students spend much of their day in academics and career training.When the school day ends, student life doesn't.That's where Recreation comes in.You'll help provide students with a variety of activities that encourage fun, fitness, creativity, teamwork, social interaction, leadership, and healthy ways to spend their free time.And we don't want recreation to feel like the same activity every day.We want you to bring ideas!Depending on available resources and approved programming, recreation could include things like: Basketball, volleyball, and other sports Game nights and tournaments Arts, crafts, and creative projects Karaoke and talent activities ️ Board games, chess, and competitions️ Fitness and wellness activities Movie or themed nights Holiday and special events Music-related activities Student competitions and challenges Outdoor recreation Team-building activities Student clubs and interest-based activitiesYour goal is to help make recreation something students want to participate in. You'll Help Create the Student ExperienceBeing a Recreation Advisor isn't simply about handing students a basketball or opening the game room.You'll help plan, organize, promote, supervise, and participate in activities.You may: Plan activities — Help create a recreation calendar that offers students different things to do throughout the week. Lead programs — Organize games, tournaments, fitness activities, creative programs, and special events. Encourage participation — Get students excited about upcoming activities and encourage students who may be hesitant to join. Supervise students — Maintain appropriate supervision while helping students enjoy themselves safely. Bring new ideas — Suggest activities based on student interests and help keep programming fresh and engaging. Use community resources — Help coordinate recreation and leadership opportunities with local organizations and resources when appropriate. You're Also a MentorSometimes the most meaningful conversations with students don't happen behind a desk.They happen while you're shooting basketball.Setting up an event.Playing a board game.Helping with an art project.Or talking after a student has had a difficult day.As a Recreation Advisor, you'll have opportunities to build positive professional relationships with students while helping them develop: Confidence Teamwork Communication skills Leadership Respect for others Accountability Healthy coping skills Positive habitsYou'll encourage students while also maintaining appropriate boundaries and holding them accountable for Center expectations.️ Fun Still Has to Be SafeCreating an exciting recreation program also means creating a safe and structured environment.You'll: Supervise recreation activities and spaces Make sure students follow safety expectations Respond appropriately when concerns arise Help address student conflicts Maintain student accountability during activities Follow Center policies and procedures Document student participation when required Communicate concerns to the appropriate staffWe're looking for someone who can be fun and approachable while still being comfortable saying, “That's not safe,” or “That's not appropriate,” when necessary. Take Pride in Your Recreation SpacesYou'll also help keep the Recreation Department organized and ready for students.Responsibilities include:Maintaining recreation equipment and suppliesKeeping track of inventoryMonitoring how equipment is usedReporting damaged or missing equipmentPerforming minor equipment repairs when appropriateRecommending equipment or supplies that may improve programmingHelping maintain clean, organized, and welcoming recreation areasYou may also have opportunities to oversee students participating in a Recreation Aide program, helping them develop responsibility and leadership experience. You'll Work With the Whole CenterRecreation doesn't operate by itself.You'll collaborate with staff from Residential Living, Counseling, Career Preparation, Social Development, Education & Training, Safety & Security, and other departments to coordinate activities and support students.You'll also help coordinate evening programming, special events, leadership activities, and other Center-wide experiences.Good communication and teamwork are essential.
