Job summary

Center for Family Services in New Jersey is seeking a Peer Recovery Coach to support individuals on their recovery journey through non-clinical services, education and peer mentoring.

The role emphasizes connecting clients to resources, developing recovery plans, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to promote sustained well-being and community integration.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of personal recovery experience.
  • 12 months experience as Peer Recovery Coach in past 3 years.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English desirable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English.
  • Knowledge of community/recovery resources.
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently.
  • Understanding of relapse prevention and harm reduction techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to meet the physical and training requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Help clients navigate recovery resources and access housing, employment, health services.
  • Assist clients in developing an Individual Recovery Action Plan.
  • Provide recovery education across stages of recovery from engagement to sustained recovery.
  • Assist clients in applying for health insurance.
  • Provide transportation to aftercare and support services.
  • Connect clients to Community of Recovery activities in a sober environment.
  • Identify and link to community resources to support goals.
  • Share personal recovery experiences and coping strategies.
  • Encourage reflection and healthier attitudes.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary team to meet client needs.
  • Participate in weekly supervision.
  • Serve as liaison among administration, staff, clients, and volunteers.

Position Summary:

The role of the Peer Recovery Coach is to provide non-clinical services intended to aid individuals in establishing and maintaining individual recovery from addiction and mental illness. The Peer Recovery Coach must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships. The PRC will help people in recovery to improve their quality of life through connecting them to social, spiritual, and peer supports.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Help clients navigate recovery support systems and access resources including health and wellness, housing, employment, and other professional and non-professional services
  • Assist clients in developing an Individual Recovery Action Plan
  • Provide recovery education to service recipients for every phase of the recovery journey from pre-recovery engagement, recovery initiation, recovery stabilization and sustained recovery maintenance
  • Assist clients with applying for health insurance
  • Provide transportation assistance to and from aftercare treatment and support services
  • Assist clients in feeling connected to a Community of Recovery through pro-social, recreational and cultural activities in a sober environment
  • Actively identify and support linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self-help groups, professional services, etc) that support the recovering person's goals and interests. This will involve a collaborative effort including the recovering person, agency staff and other relevant stakeholders
  • Share personal recovery experiences and demonstrates and models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies
  • Help clients to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing understanding of self, personal problems, and client's part in creating them
  • Support connections to community based, mutual self-help groups. Link individuals to appropriate professional resources when needed. Provide vision-driven hope and encouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community based activities (e.g. work, school, relationships, physical activity, self-directed hobbies, etc)
  • Provide clients with ongoing access to education regarding substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, tobacco, nutrition and exercise and other health and wellness information
  • Educate and support clients in implementing a range of relapse prevention and harm-reduction strategies
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure client needs are met
  • Actively participate in weekly supervision with Supervisor
  • Serve as a liaison between administration, staff, clients, and volunteers; and
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2 years demonstrated personal recovery experience
  • 12 months experience, within past 3 years, either paid or volunteer as Peer Recovery Coach
  • Bilingual Spanish/English desirable
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Knowledge of community/recovery resources
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently
  • Understanding of relapse prevention and harm reduction techniques
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to meet the physical and training requirements of the position.
