Position Description
The Reconciliation Accountant is responsible for providing accurate and timely financial information to management by reviewing, analyzing, and reconciling general ledger accounts in accordance with U.S. GAAP. The position also supports the design, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of reconciliation procedures, automated workflows, and exception-management processes while maintaining strong internal controls, data integrity, documentation, and appropriate oversight.
The position is located at Kensington, MD headquarters. The role is hybrid, in office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Position Responsibilities
- Prepares and reconciles bank and general ledger accounts, including Federal Reserve, FHLB, custodian accounts, and ACH transactions, and resolves outstanding items in a timely manner.
- Investigates discrepancies identified through the reconciliation process and communicates effectively across departments to clear variances and document resolution.
- Reconciles fixed asset and prepaid subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger.
- Prepares and records journal entries for monthly accruals and other assigned activity.
- Prepares accurate internal reports and reconciliation status updates for management.
- Conducts ad hoc projects and analysis to support accounting and operational decision‑making.
- Prepares workpapers and schedules for regulatory examinations and external and internal audits.
- Assists departments and branches with accounting and reconciliation matters.
- Maintains current procedures and participates in continuous process improvement, standardization, and automation initiatives.
- Partners with Accounting, Information Technology, and business owners to identify reconciliation processes suitable for automation and translate requirements into controlled workflows.
- Investigates automation failures, incomplete data feeds, false matches, unusual transactions, and unresolved exceptions; documents root causes and coordinates corrective action.
- Maintains audit trails, control evidence, process maps, data lineage, model or agent instructions, testing results, and change documentation for reconciliation processes.
- Performs periodic quality assurance over reconciliations by analyzing exception trends, aging, match rates, overrides, and recurring breaks, and recommends control or workflow improvements.
- Trains reconciliation owners and reviewers on approved AI‑enabled tools, automated workflows, exception handling, and related procedures.
- Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or Finance or equivalent work experience.
- Two to four years of accounting experience, preferably within a financial institution or credit union.
- Knowledge of U.S. GAAP, account reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tact and diplomacy.
- Detail‑oriented with strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Hands‑on experience using AI agents, workflow automation, robotic process automation, or similar technologies to support account reconciliations, exception management, month‑end close, or other accounting processes is preferred
- Experience documenting, testing, validating, and monitoring automated accounting workflows, including control points, approvals, exception thresholds, and audit evidence is preferred
- Experience with reconciliation software, ERP or core financial systems, data visualization tools, Microsoft Power Automate, Microsoft Copilot, or comparable platforms is preferred.
- Working knowledge of data governance, access controls, segregation of duties as they relate to financial processes.
- Ability to communicate technical workflow and automation concepts clearly to accounting staff, business partners, auditors teams.
