Job summary

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles is seeking a reception/intake specialist to serve as the friendly first point of contact for tenants seeking housing help. The role requires compassionate communication and the ability to manage calls and inquiries efficiently.

You will screen eligibility, enter data into case systems, schedule appointments, and support staff. This on-site position reports to the South LA office four days a week, with a six‑month probationary period.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of receptionist/intake/first point of contact experience.
  • Outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills, able to relate to diverse individuals with respect, patience, and humility.
  • Strong time‑management skills and the aptitude to work productively in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in keeping accurate records, handling confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Teams), Adobe, and Zoom applications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answer a high volume of phone calls from tenants experiencing a housing crisis and promptly connect each caller with appropriate services, resources, or information.
  • Conduct initial intake screening via phone, in person, and online with care and empathy.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of detailed eligibility criteria when screening potential clients for legal services, considering funder requirements, conflicts of interest, and service priorities.
  • Accurately enter and maintain intake and case information in online case‑management systems, documenting all client interactions while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Schedule appointments and communicate effectively in writing via email, Microsoft Teams, and case notes with clients, colleagues, and partner agencies.
  • Greet and assist walk‑in visitors at LAFLA’s community office, as assigned.
  • Perform other clerical duties, such as photocopying, scanning, and filing.

Role will report on‑site out of the South LA office 4 days a week. The successful candidate must be local and willing to work from the assigned LAFLA location.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

A six‑month probationary period will be required.
