Job summary

Merlin Labs in Boston, MA is seeking a hands-on systems software engineer to own real-time I/O software and telemetry infrastructure for aircraft integration benches and simulation environments.

You will develop modern C++ on embedded Linux, build hardware abstraction layers, and create asynchronous Rust services for multi-source telemetry. On-site collaboration with avionics and flight-test engineers is essential.

Qualifications

• Strong proficiency in modern C++, including resource management and concurrency.
• Experience developing timing-sensitive software on Linux with fixed-period execution and watchdogs.
• Deep familiarity with Linux host and embedded systems, services, networking, and diagnostics.
• Experience integrating avionics interfaces such as ARINC 429 and interpreting interface control documents.
• Experience developing Rust services or extensive async systems programming.
• Experience with automated testing, CI, and Git-based workflows.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, development, and sustainment of real-time I/O software and telemetry infrastructure.
• Develop modern C++ software on embedded Linux targets to interface with avionics hardware and simulation models.
• Develop and maintain hardware abstraction layers using UEI PowerDNA and vendor SDKs.
• Integrate ARINC 429, CAN, serial, and discrete I/O per ICDs; validate encoding and error handling.
• Develop asynchronous Rust services ingesting multiple telemetry sources and streaming data.
• Implement binary protocols and network interfaces using UDP/TCP and ZeroMQ.
• Build timestamp alignment, session recording, and data replay capabilities.
• Maintain cross-compilation and deployment workflows for ARM Linux targets (Yocto, CMake, Debian, systemd, Docker).
• Establish automated verification via unit tests, hardware integration tests, parser fuzzing, and Python tooling.
• Collaborate with avionics, flight test, and software engineers to reproduce lab integration conditions.
