Job summary

Sylvan Learning Center in California is seeking a part-time Science Instructor/Tutor to provide engaging reading instruction and support in biology, chemistry, physics, and general science concepts. You will work with small groups, follow Sylvan’s curriculum, and help students become confident, independent learners.

The role requires availability during after-school hours (3:00 PM–7:00 PM on weekdays and Saturday morning). Training and ongoing professional development are provided.

Qualifications

• Strong reading and English-language skills.
• Ability to work with up to three students on different lessons.
• Reliable transportation to the Sylvan center.
• Willingness to complete background screening as required by law.
• Familiarity with Sylvan curriculum and instructional methods.

Responsibilities

• Provide engaging reading instruction individually and in groups of up to four students.
• Teach phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and other reading skills.
• Follow Sylvan’s instructional methods, curriculum, and preplanned lessons.
• Help students understand reading assignments and prepare for tests.
• Adapt explanations to each student’s needs and build confidence.
• Document student progress and complete instructional notes.
• Use tablets and other instructional technology as required.
• Maintain a safe, organized learning environment.
• Complete all required Sylvan training.
