Job summary

Sylvan Learning Center in Union, California is seeking a part-time Science Instructor/ Tutor to provide engaging, individualized science and reading support after school. You will help students in biology, chemistry, physics, and general science, while reinforcing reading skills and study strategies.

The role requires availability Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.; Friday: 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.; Saturday: 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., with shifts varying by enrollment.

Qualifications

  • Strong reading, comprehension, and English-language skills.
  • Ability to explain reading concepts clearly and patiently.
  • Experience working with children or teenagers.
  • Reliable transportation to the Sylvan center.
  • Consistent availability during required instructional hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging reading instruction individually and in groups.
  • Teach phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Follow Sylvan’s curriculum and preplanned lessons.
  • Help students prepare for tests and complete assignments.
  • Adapt explanations to each student’s needs and build confidence.
  • Document student progress and complete instructional notes.

Science Instructor/ Tutor [3:00 PM- 7:00 PM]

The Science Tutor provides engaging, individualized academic support to students in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and general science courses. This role focuses on helping students strengthen their understanding of scientific concepts, develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and become more confident and independent learners.

The instructor works with students at their individual academic level and provides support with classroom assignments, homework, projects, quizzes, exams, and course review. Tutors break down challenging scientific concepts into clear, manageable steps and help students understand both the concepts and the problem-solving processes needed to succeed.

Required Availability

Applicants must be available during the following instructional hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 3:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.

Actual scheduled shifts and weekly hours may vary based on enrollment, staffing needs, and student schedules.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide engaging reading instruction individually and in groups of up to four students.
  • Teach phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and other assigned reading skills.
  • Follow Sylvan’s instructional methods, curriculum, and preplanned lessons.
  • Help students understand reading assignments and prepare for classroom tests.
  • Adapt explanations and support to each student’s academic needs.
  • Encourage students and help build their confidence and independence.
  • Accurately document student progress and complete instructional notes.
  • Use tablets and other instructional technology as required.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.
  • Complete all required Sylvan training.
Requirements
  • Strong reading, comprehension, and English-language skills.
  • Ability to explain reading concepts clearly and patiently.
  • Ability to work with up to three students completing different lessons.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with children or teenagers.
  • Consistent availability during the required instructional hours.
  • Reliable transportation to the assigned Sylvan center.
  • Ability to follow established curriculum and center procedures.
  • Ability to complete applicable background-screening requirements, consistent with state and local law.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred, not required)
  • Teaching credential ((preferred, not required)
  • Accepting current enrolled college students
  • One to two years of teaching, tutoring, or classroom experience (preferred, not required)
  • Experience teaching phonics, fluency, vocabulary, or reading comprehension (preferred, not required)
  • Experience supporting students with different academic needs and learning styles (preferred, not required)
