Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking a Conductor Trainee to join its team on the extra board, with on-call shifts and 2–3 days away from home weekly. You will train, bid on regular assignments, and advance with seniority under a union structure.

The role requires readiness for 24/7 shifts, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to pass FRA screenings. Training lasts about 20 weeks with accommodations and benefits described in the posting.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to report to work within 90 minutes.
• Clean driving record in the past 36 months, without suspensions or drug/alcohol incidents.
• Must not have been involved in drug/alcohol diversion or probation.
• Must pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling and other tasks.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA regulations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
