Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking conductors to join its team. The role starts on the extra board, with bidding for regular assignments after building seniority. You must be available 24/7 with as little as 90 minutes notice and be willing to travel 2–3 days weekly.

Training lasts about 20 weeks, with on-the-job instruction and exams. Union membership is required within 60 days after training. Conductor Trainees earn per-shift pay during training; first-year conductors average around $70,000 annually,

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to report to work within 90 minutes.
• Clean driving record in the past 36 months, without suspensions or certain incidents.
• Must pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform tasks such as coupling, aligning drawbars, applying hand brakes, and riding railcars.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA and company safety regulations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
