Job summary

HNTB in Chelmsford, MA is seeking an Intern Engineer to support Massachusetts Rail & Transit projects this summer. You will assist engineering teams with basic tasks reflecting introductory curriculum and gain exposure to track, signaling, and power systems.

Responsibilities include preparing drawings, performing simple calculations, and supporting documentation. Enroll in a post-secondary engineering program and bring strong teamwork and communication skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program.
• Two years of post-secondary engineering coursework, preferred in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical fields.
• Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation is beneficial.

Our Chelmsford, MA office is seeking Intern Engineers looking to help deliver some of the region's biggest and most complex public transportation projects within Rail & Transit for Summer 2027.

This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting the Massachusetts Rail & Transit department on assigned project(s) by performing basic engineering related tasks which may reflect elements of standard post-secondary engineering curriculum.

Relocation and housing are NOT provided for these positions.

• Track Engineering
• Assists with rail layout and alignment studies
• Support grading and drainage design
• Help prepare drawings and calculations for track geometry
• Communications Systems
• Support design of fiber optic networks, radio systems, and data systems
• Assist with video surveillance, access control, and passenger information systems
• Help prepare CAD drawings, specifications, and cost estimates
• Signals and Train Control
• Aid in developing circuits for switches, signals, and crossings
• Support layout of signal blocks and interlockings
• Assist with safety documentation and compliance reviews

• Help prepare load flow and short circuit studies
• Assist with grounding and lighting designs for facilities

What You'll Do

You'll Need

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program

You'll Bring

• An understanding of engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• An understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
• The ability to perform basic engineering calculations.
• The ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
• Willingness to learn and take initiative in a dynamic work setting.

You'll Prefer

• Completion of 2 years of post-secondary engineering program including:
• Civil (Track Engineering or Overhead Contact Systems)
• Mechanical (Overhead Contact Systems)
• Electrical (Communications Systems, Signals and Train Control, or Traction Power)
• AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
• Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure

The approximate pay range for Massachusetts is $25.28 - $37.92. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
