HNTB in the United States is seeking New Grad Engineers for Summer 2027 in the Rail & Transit practice. You will help produce design calculations, reports, engineering plans and specifications as part of a project team.

Responsibilities include research, calculations, design development, and assisting with cost estimates and CAD drawings. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering; EIT certification is preferred and familiarity with MicroStation or AutoCAD is expected.

  • Complete assigned work within the schedule and hours provided.
  • Support preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Assist in preparing project quantity and cost estimates.
  • Assist engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Support various tasks including data collection, field investigations, and design development.

Our Chelmsford, MA office is seeking New Grad Engineers looking to help deliver some of the region's biggest and most complex public transportation projects within Rail & Transit for Summer 2027.

This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB's clients.

    • Contribute to control systems, CCTV, and passenger information systems
    • Support development of specifications, cost estimates, and CAD drawings
  • Signals and Train Control
    • Develop signal block layouts and interlocking designs
    • Design highway grade crossing warning systems
    • Support microprocessor and relay-based control system design
  • Overhead Contact Systems
    • Design catenary systems and structural supports
    • Prepare detailed drawings, calculations, and material lists
    • Evaluate integration of OCS with track and other transit systems
What You'll Do:
  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.
  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
What You'll Bring:
  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.
  • Attains knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCad or other software.
What We Prefer:
  • Master's degree in Engineering including:
    • Civil or Mechanical (Overhead Contact Systems)
    • Electrical (Communications Systems and Signals)
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
  • Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure

The approximate pay range for Massachusetts is $79,688.15 - $119,532.23. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
