Job summary

Burns Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer, Signaling and Train Control to join our Transit and Rail team in Sacramento, CA.

You will lead signaling engineering, design, testing, and commissioning for the CAHSR program, covering ETCS Level 2, Automatic Route Setting, CBTC and related signaling systems. Reporting to the Project Manager, you will develop and review deliverables, manage interfaces with signaling, telecommunications, rolling stock, track, and operations teams, and

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 10+ years in railway signaling or rail systems engineering.
• Experience taking signaling from design through testing and final acceptance.
• Strong knowledge of systems integration and safety-critical railway applications.
• Experience supporting requirements management and interface definition.
• Willingness to travel 25–50% along the alignment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, review, and approve signaling deliverables across design, construction, testing and commissioning.
• Ensure technical documentation is complete, coordinated, and compliant with program requirements.
• Support requirements management, system architecture development, and interface definition for train control.
• Review supplier and contractor designs for compliance with specifications and ops needs.
• Coordinate interfaces between signaling, telecom, rolling stock, track, traction power and operations.
• Provide technical oversight for ETCS Level 2, ARC, interlockings and RC centers.
• Support FRA submissions and safety/regulatory approvals coordination.
• Work with safety authorities and stakeholders to obtain required certifications and approvals.
• Develop and review test plans and commissioning strategies for signaling systems.
