Job summary

Norfolk Southern in Knoxville, TN is recruiting for an Apprentice Signal Trainee. This hands-on program trains you in signal maintenance with classroom instruction and field training, preparing you to install and repair signal systems critical to safe rail operations.

Travel up to 75% during training; on-call, nights, and weekends required; must join the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen and obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days. Classroom and field training span about 52 weeks.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
  • Pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
  • Must not have a conviction for DUI or related offenses.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
  • Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights and switch machines.
  • Work on crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
  • Support Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Operate hand tools, testing instruments, and heavy equipment.
  • Document inspections, repairs, and installations.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and respond to on-call assignments.
