Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking candidates for the Apprentice Signal Trainee program. This hands-on, field-based role trains individuals to install, inspect, and maintain critical signal systems for safe rail operations.

Training lasts about 52 weeks with classroom and field instruction, relocation may be limited, and on-call work is required. Participants will join the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen within 60 days of seniority.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Preferred: Technical certificate or associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and electrical switch locks.
• Crossing warning devices and interlocking systems, PTС and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams; operate hand tools and testing instruments.
• Document inspections and installations; work safely in outdoor environments; respond to on-call assignments.
