Job summary

State of Connecticut’s Department of Transportation in New Haven seeks a Transportation Rail Officer 1 to support safety and security across rail systems, including inspections, regulatory compliance, and coordination with railroads and CTDOT engineering.

Role emphasizes collaboration with FRA/FTA/TSA, risk analysis, and participation in emergency exercises, with on-site work in New Haven, CT and potential telework after probation.

Qualifications

• Six (6) years of experience in a professional or technical capacity in a railroad or railroad related organization.
• College training may be substituted for General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half year of experience to a maximum of four years for a Bachelor's degree.
• Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program may be substituted for the General Experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide safety and security oversight of passenger and freight operators throughout the State.
• Perform inspections and diagnostic reviews of at-grade highway-rail crossings.
• Coordinate with railroads, CTDOT engineering, and government partners on plans and compliance.
• Support security programs, outreach, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist in planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of rail projects.
