Job summary

At BNSF Railway in Richmond, CA, the Mechanical Department seeks a full-time Mechanical Shop Laborer to assist skilled mechanics with locomotive and equipment maintenance. This role supports safe train operations, with a 40-hour week and union-based shift assignments including nights and weekends.

Minimal travel and company-paid on-the-job training are provided. Relocation assistance is not available, and a 120-day probationary period applies.

Qualifications

• Able to work now and in the future without BNSF sponsorship.
• At least 18 years of age by the anticipated start date.
• Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.
• Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
• Able to work safely in the above working conditions.
• Able to work the above shift/hours.
• Ability to read, write and communicate English.
• Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs without assistance.
• Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow.

Responsibilities

• Keeping work areas clean and orderly and operating maintenance equipment within a shop environment.
• Operating forklift, mobile crane, track mobile, shop tractor, and power hand tools.
• Sand, fueling, and cleaning locomotives as well as cleaning and organizing shop areas.
• Operating power-driven equipment such as a vacuum cleaner, electric broom, or steam cleaning gun.
• Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment with varied weather, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy machinery.
