Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. is seeking a Conductor to move freight safely and efficiently. Training will be provided both in the classroom and hands-on, with work outdoors in all weather. The role offers opportunities for growth and advancement within a dynamic railroad environment.

You will comply with safety regulations, communicate with team, operate track switches, and assist with train operations across shifts, including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• Must have effective communication skills both written and verbal.
• Situational awareness and decision‑making abilities in safety‑sensitive environments.
• Experience in safety‑sensitive environments is a plus.
• Minimum education: high school diploma or GED; valid driver’s license; at least 18 years old.

Responsibilities

• Comply with all federal, state, and railroad safety and operational regulations.
• Follow instructions from trainer, mentor, or supervisor.
• Communicate with team using oral, written, hand signals, lantern signals or radio for train/railcar movement.
• Operate track switches to determine train/railcar routes.
• Plan and complete assigned work safely and efficiently.
• Climb on/off equipment and walk the train/rail yard as needed.
• Apply/release hand brakes on railcars multiple times daily.
• Read and understand rule books and other materials.
• Inspect train and equipment for safety while moving and stationary.
• Connect air hoses and electrical components between locomotives or railcars.
• Use basic computer skills for electronic reporting and documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
