Position Overview
Performs imaging / therapeutic services and associated patient care in support of the Radiology Department's mission to provide diagnostic information for the subsequent treatment of patients at WVU Medicine.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
For West Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland locations:
- Completion of an Accredited Radiography School
- Must be registered (or registry eligible) by the ARRT in Radiography. If registry eligible, must pass boards within 6 months of hire.
- Radiologist Technologist certification through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board of Examiners, or applicable state where services will be performed.
- Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire
- West Virginia state criminal background check required, and Federal, if applicable, for DHHR BMS regulated area
For Pennsylvania locations:
- Completion of an Accredited Radiography School
- Must be registered (or registry eligible) by the ARRT in Radiography. If registry eligible, must pass boards within one year of hire.
- Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire
- State criminal background check required, and Federal, if applicable, for DHHR BMS regulated area
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:
- Rotate in all Diagnostic areas to develop technical skills (e.g., Fluoro, Mobiles, Routine, Operating Room, Endoscopy, Orthopedics).
- Perform imaging procedures based on patient assessment, request, and protocols, with supervision and periodic evaluations.
- Produce high-quality images using imaging equipment and systems.
- Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology to optimize image quality while minimizing radiation exposure.
- Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff through shielding, collimation, and minimizing repeats.
- Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure safety.
- Assess patient needs and provide support related to comfort, hygiene, and range of motion.
- Prepare contrast agents, pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays per protocols.
- Educate patients about radiographic procedures and answer questions.
- Promote teamwork by interacting positively with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff.
- Engage in problem solving, crisis management, system implementation, and performance improvements.
- Adhere to ethical standards, policies, regulations, and guidelines.
- Report equipment failures immediately.
- Complete required in-services and competencies.
- Position patients accurately according to protocols.
- Coordinate daily workflow.
- Supervise and instruct radiology students in clinical settings.
- Ensure all components of imaging are completed thoroughly.
Physical Requirements
Must meet the following physical demands:
- Differentiate shades of gray on monitors or photographs.
- Stand and walk for prolonged periods.
- Wear lead aprons weighing 8-15 pounds for extended periods.
- Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Carry items up to 20 pounds.
Working Environment
Characteristics include:
- Minimal radiation exposure within safety standards, monitored by dosimeter.
- Exposure to airborne particles and bodily fluids.
- Operation of imaging equipment with moving parts.
Skills and Abilities
- Positive interaction with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple situations.
- Improvise with positioning and equipment when routine methods are compromised.
